GOD WILL GUIDE US
For this God is our God forever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end (Psalm 48:14 NIV).
Many of us are excited to see the dawn of a New Year today. A year with many packages wrapped into a big one. Each day, one of these packages will unfurl before every individual as God has destined until the end of the year. What is scary is that, none of us knows what these individual packages will bring in any given day. However, as we allow God to guide our actions and reactions to each of these packages, we will definitely navigate through this year.
The Psalmist in the above passage reminisced the following attributes of God: 1. That He is unique. 2. He is eternal. 3. He is personal. 4. He is a guide. 5. He is faithful. The Jews believe in a God who has no rival in comparison to other gods. He is the only God who revealed himself to Abraham and invited him into a personal relationship ratified by a covenant – circumcision. The tenet of the covenant stipulates that God will be faithful and a guide to him and his descendants as long as they remain loyal to him.
At the age of seventy-five, God asked him to leave his country and people to a land that He is about to give him. Abraham has never been to that place before; and didn’t know what the future will bring. Nevertheless, the Bible says: 4 So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him... 5 He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there (Genesis 12:4-5).
Abraham’s story is the story of every Jew; as it is that of every Christian. The Bible tells us that he became very successful and was dubbed “A friend of God” (Isaiah 41:8c). The question is: How did he do it? Abraham’s narrative is replete with ups and downs; with so many heartaches and disappointments; yet, he lived a fulfilled life – a life that was blessed physically and spiritually. It’s been suggested that Abraham’s resilience and success stemmed out of his close walk with God; as He guided him through his journey on earth.
During the Christmas holidays, somebody asked a question: “Will the year 2018 be better or worse?” The truth is, nobody knows the answer to this question as far as this year is concerned. However, we have to remember that, as God guided Abraham through all his journeys, so will He guide us. For, if we seek his guidance in our relationships, businesses, churches, finances, desires and aspirations; regardless of how big or small a decision we have to make, the God of Abraham who is also our God will surely bring success our way.
Throughout this year, let us constantly remind ourselves that: “it is only God who knows what is best for us.” He is the only one who knows what this year is bringing our way. He knows the fights the devil has stacked up against us to bring hardships, disappointments, sicknesses, failures and poverty our way. Anytime we find ourselves in the midst of the storms of life, let’s encourage ourselves with the words of Apostle Paul: “If God is for us, who can be against us” (Romans 8:31b)?
In conclusion, as we journey through 2018, let’s take comfort from William Williams’ hymn: GUIDE ME O THOU GREAT JEHOVAH
Guide me, O thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but thou art mighty;
Hold me with thy powerful hand;
Bread of heaven,
Feed me till I want no more.
Open now the crystal fountain
Whence the healing stream doth flow;
Let the fire and cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through;
Be thou still my strength and shield.
When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of deaths, and hell’s destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan’s side:
Songs of praises,
I will ever give to thee.[i]
