See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? (Isaiah 43:19 NIV)

Dear Saints,

FAITH

So Jesus said to them, “Because of your [a]unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you (Matthew 17:20 NKJV).

There are many tangible and intangible things we do daily either consciously or unconsciously to demonstrate our faith. For example, anytime we dine outside in a restaurant, buy coffee, take a taxi, bus, or travel on a plane, we are placing our lives in the hands of complete strangers; and that takes faith on our part. This kind of faith is called natural faith; which everyone on planet earth has.

This means that, faith is not limited to a belief in God. Such faith is often called supernatural faith. Supernatural faith is therefore an intentional faith which is sought after by the adherents of God. This kind of faith looks beyond the realities of this world. Hence, the writer of Hebrews wrote; 1Now faith is the [
a]substance of things hoped for, the [b]evidence of things not seen. By faith we understand that the [c]worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible (Hebrews 11:1&3).

Speaking to his disciples, Jesus said; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you (Matthew 17:20). A passage like this underscores the importance of faith in our relationship with God. Because, we become Christians through faith in Christ. Writing to the Ephesians, Apostle Paul said, For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God (Ephesians 2:8).

After we have been saved, we need faith to live out the Christian life. Paul said; For we walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:17). If so, then, we only need a small amount of faith like a mustard seed to receive miracles from God. Jesus knew his disciples had failed to heal a boy who was being troubled by evil spirit. He later cured the boy when his father brought him to Jesus.

Jesus told the disciples that, it was because of their unbelief that was why they couldn’t cure the boy. The Bible tells us that, unbelief is a sin and a hindrance to receiving answers to our prayers. The only way we can receive something from God is to have faith in him. The Bible is filled with accounts of many miracles and answered prayers received by godly men and women because of their faith in God. Here are some examples as recorded in Hebrews chapter 11:

By faith Noah built an ark to save himself and his family (vs 7).

By faith Abraham left his father’s home to a land God had promised him (vs 8).

By faith Abraham and his wife Sarah gave birth to Isaac in their old age (vs 11).

By faith Jacob blessed his sons when he was about to die (vs 21).

By faith Joseph prophesied about the return of the Israelites from Egypt to the Promised Land; and gave instructions about his bones (vs 22).

By faith the Israelites passed through the Red Sea (vs 29).

By faith the walls of Jericho came down (vs 30).

Saints we are living in a hectic world which demands our human efforts to achieve so much everyday. However, we should never lose sight of what faith in God can help us to achieve. This is not to suggest that, we become lazy though, we have to work hard and leave the rest to God; as we exercise our mustard seed of faith.
