26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home (John 19:26-27 NKJV).

Like all mothers, Mary, the mother of Jesus was involved in the life of her Son Jesus; from his childhood, to his ministry and death. Even though, we don’t hear much about his father and siblings, they all played important roles in his life.

Human beings are social creatures. This means, whatever affects us either positively or negatively, do affect those around us. It’s for this reason that, pain and suffering do not only affect their victims; but other people as well.

When Jesus was hanging on the cross, he saw his mother standing with other women at the foot of the cross. Though, he was going through excruciating pain, his love for his mother and her welfare became his concern. He knew he had a responsibility towards the welfare of his mother.

With John standing beside Mary, Jesus said to her; “Woman, behold your son!” Then he turned to John and said; “Behold your mother” (Matthew 19:26c-27b)! Here, we see the height of Jesus’ compassion for his mother. Throughout his ministry, compassion was at the centre of what he preached and lived for. He cared for sinful humanity by preaching the good news to them. He cared for the sick by healing them. He cared for the rejected by socializing with them.

The question is, in our pain and suffering, do we help others who might be going through similar experience? It’s easy to focus on our own suffering than showing sympathy for others. The reality is, we might not find a better time to help those who really need help. Ours is to do what Jesus did for his mother. Otherwise, we might be doing disservice to ourselves and those who are suffering among us.

As always, let’s continue to hold each other’s hand and pray for ourselves as the coming of Jesus draws closer. Please, do send this study to your contacts as well.
