See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? (Isaiah 43:19 NIV)

Dear Saints,

INTERRUPTION

Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints (Jude 3 NKJV).

Almost every activity on the face of the earth has been interrupted in one way or another by the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID 19). These are not ordinary times – many businesses, schools, churches, shops etc have been closed down. As well, many countries have closed down their borders including their airports; not forgetting the lockdowns on many communities. Undoubtedly, everybody in one way or the other might have their normal routines tossed up due to the unprecedented interruptions seen and felt around the globe.

From the passage above, we see Jude who was Jesus’ half brother had his writing plans interrupted. His original plan was to write about salvation to his readers. This changed when he heard of how some false teachers were going round to propagate false teachings among the churches.

Jude is not the only person in the Bible who had his plans interrupted. Here are some few:

JACOB and his family had their lives interrupted when they emigrated to Egypt because of famine (Genesis 45 & 46).

KING JEHOSHAPHAT and Judah had their lives interrupted when five nations came to attack them. In the midst of their interruption, Jehoshaphat declared a national fasting and prayer. God in his mercy brought victory to them (2 Chronicles 20:1-30).

DAVID had his life interrupted when King Saul wanted to kill him because, he (David) had killed Goliath. David had to ran away by hiding in caves; but eventually, God raised him to be the king of his Israel (1 Samuel 18 - 24).

NEHEMIAH had his life interrupted when he traveled back to Jerusalem to build its walls that have been broken; and its gates burnt with fire (Nehemiah 1 - 3).

SAUL (Later APOSTLE PAUL) had his mission for life interrupted when he met Jesus on the Damascus road. He turned over his life to him after seeing the bright light and hearing the voice of Jesus asking; Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me (Acts 9)?

CHRISTIANS OF THE EARLY CHURCH had their lives interrupted when persecution broke among them. Many of them left Jerusalem; and scattered to other towns as they continued to preach the gospel (Acts 8).

From the above biblical examples in my view, there are three lessons to be learnt when we are faced with interruption,

INTERRUPTIONS ARE PART OF LIFE

Life is so complex and complicated that, in as much as we plan to have things done; other factors beyond our control could change those plans. This shows us that, since the dawn of time, human beings always depended on each other.

OUR ATTITUDE IN THE FACE OF INTERRUPTION IS VERY IMPORTANT

Anytime we’re faced with interruption, we may choose to do one of the following: a) We may choose to be angry and react negatively. Such attitudes cloud our vision and sap our energy. b) We may choose to be fearful and allow panic to rush us do things that could eventually harm us. Or c) We may choose to be calm. Such reaction helps us to reserve our energy to enable us cope with the issue at hand.

TRUST IN GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY

God is the Creator of our lives and the universe. As such, his unseen hands are always guiding and protecting the affairs of man – whether good or bad. This means, the God of the universe is also the God of history. God is true in his nature and character. His love for his children will never diminish. From generation to generation, he’s shown himself merciful to all those who trust him. His infinite power and wisdom is there to protect those who know him.

Saints, I ask that we will all continue to trust God to see us through during COVID 19. Let us follow the simple hygienic protocols suggested by our health professionals. Let us also obey our governments by minimizing our public gatherings whether church or otherwise. Let’s self quarantine if there’s the need to do so,

In conclusion, I leave you with what God told his people through the Prophet Isaiah;

21 Have you not known?
Have you not heard?
Has it not been told you from the beginning?
Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
22 It is He who sits above the circle of the earth,
And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers,
Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain,
And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.
23 He [
a]brings the princes to nothing;
He makes the judges of the earth useless.

24 Scarcely shall they be planted,
Scarcely shall they be sown,
Scarcely shall their stock take root in the earth,
When He will also blow on them,
And they will wither,
And the whirlwind will take them away like stubble.

25 “To whom then will you liken Me,
Or to whom shall I be equal?” says the Holy One.
26 Lift up your eyes on high,
And see who has created these things,
Who brings out their host by number;
He calls them all by name,
By the greatness of His might
And the strength of His power;
Not one is missing.

27 Why do you say, O Jacob,
And speak, O Israel:
“My way is hidden from the Lord,
And my just claim is passed over by my God”?
28 Have you not known?
Have you not heard?
The everlasting God, the Lord,
The Creator of the ends of the earth,
Neither faints nor is weary.
His understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the weak,
And to those who have no might He increases strength.
30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary,
And the young men shall utterly fall,
31 But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint (Isaiah 40:21-31 NKJV).
