Dear Saints,
FOCUS
Timothy, my dear son, be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 2:1 NLT).
Dictionary.com defines focus as “to direct one's attention or efforts”.[i] Several reasons could motivate people to direct their attention and efforts into doing a particular task. Among them are: 1. The importance of that particular task to those involved. 2. The benefit they’ll receive from 3. How that task will contribute to their overall success in life?
Our parents and guardians make decisions on our behalf from the time we’re born till we’re grown. For example, they’ll decide the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the places we go to, the friends we play with and the schools we attend.
As we grow older, they wean us off by involving us in most of the decisions they make for us. From eighteen years and beyond, we become our own decision makers. It’s then up to us to make our own choices including the spouses we want to spend the rest of our lives with. For any decision we make, the onus is upon us to live with the outcome. This calls for hard work and being laser focused.
In his writing to Timothy who was Paul’s spiritual son, he (Paul) advised him as follows;
3 Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. 5 Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules (2 Timothy 2:3-5 NIV).
Throughout history, serving the Lord has never been easy. It’s a struggle. This becomes more prevalent during the times we’re living in. The things that are fighting against us and to distract us are more than those that are encouraging us. Looking at the ravages of COVID-19 with its attendant problems, it takes those who are laser focused on Jesus to live a pleasing life to him.
Saints, as we remain focused on our calling to do the work of God; let’s heed to Paul’s advice to Timothy when he told him … my dear son, be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 2:1 NLT). Let’s remember, it’s only those who would endure to the end, who will be crowned as victors.
