See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? (Isaiah 43:19 NIV)

From the Pastor's Desk

Dear Saints,
“You are worthy to take the scroll,
And to open its seals;
For You were slain,
And have redeemed us to God by Your blood
Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation (Revelation 5:9).

Almost all of God’s creation sing in one way or another. The twittering of birds, the whistling of the leaves on trees, the crashing of sea waves against the shores, the crackling of fires and the burbling of flowing streams are just few examples.

Aside from the above, human beings also sing through our voices and instruments. We sing songs of joy when we’re happy. We also sing songs of gloom when we’re sad. Singing therefore is an outward expression of our human emotions. To a large extent, singing is cathartic. It enables us to release some of our suppressed emotions within us.

The Bible informs us of the importance of singing in man’s interaction with God. Though, we do not see him, because he’s Spirit, the Triune God, (God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit) engages with, and responds to humanity through singing. For example, through singing, we’re able to express our worship to him. We are also able to express our thanks and appreciation to him. The same singing serves as a conduit for us to send our petitions and intercessory prayers to him.

 Apart from human beings and other creation who sing, celestial beings also sing. They use their singing to glorify God. Here’s what John wrote in Revelation 5:9;
And they sang a new song, saying:
“You are worthy to take the scroll,
And to open its seals;
For You were slain,
And have redeemed us to God by Your blood
Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation.

From the above passage, we see the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders in heaven expressing their gratitude to the Lamb (Jesus) for taking the scroll. This act is very significant; as it rolls back the curtain of history in heaven for us to see what happened from the beginning of God’s plan of salvation for mankind.
Here’s John’s description of the scene prior to Jesus stepping forward to take the scroll.
Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals” (Revelation 5:1-5 NIV).
This sheds light on the reason why the angels sang the new song when Jesus took the scroll. Jesus willingly accepted the call to come and suffer for us. This should therefore cause us to be a people who love to sing and praise him.
As we do that, let’s engage every fiber within us to sing with our mouths and voices, clap with our hands, tap with our feet, and play instruments with our fingers. Such singing will be our sacrifice of praise to our God.
Christ indeed has redeemed every tribe and tongue through his shed blood. This qualifies the nations to join voices in heaven one day and sing in their native languages to thank and praise the King of kings and the Lord of lords; the One who lives forever and ever.
