January 2021

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? (Isaiah 43:19 NIV)

From the Pastor's Desk
January 2021

Dear Saints,

 LIGHTHOUSE

The Lord will guide you always;
    he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land
    and will strengthen your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden,
    like a spring whose waters never fail (Isaiah 58:11 NIV).

Dictionary.com defines lighthouse as; A tower or other structure displaying or flashing a very bright
light for the guidance of ships in avoiding dangerous areas, in following certain routes[i]. The ocean is one of the wonderful creations of God. Its expanse and depth make it all the more fear-some.

Over the years, many ships have sunk to the bottom of the ocean. It has also taken the lives of many people and goods such as precious metals. Traveling on the ocean is a dangerous endeavour. The unpredictability of its waves, often fueled by high winds make traveling on it very treacherous. In the midst of these dangers, navigators and sailors find the lighthouse a useful tool. Ships use it as guides as they maneuver their journey on the ocean. This helps them to arrive safely at their destinations.

The beginning of every year, brings many unknowns. Obviously, this causes anxieties and fears in the lives of some people. This is so, because none of us knows what lies ahead of us in new year. However, one thing is certain; and that is, we will find ourselves sailing on boisterous and treacherous oceans of life. The storms that might be coming at us may be fierce. These could make some of us lose our inner compass and self-confidence.  When such times arise, it’s important we look for a lighthouse in God who’s capable to guide us reach our destinations.

There was a time in the history of the Jewish people when many of them turned their backs on God. Instead of worshipping the true God, most of them turned to worship the idols of the nations around them. In the midst of their evil ways, God continued to warn them through his prophets to come back to him.

The prophet Isaiah through the inspiration of the Spirit of God, gave them the following words of hope;
The Lord will guide you always;
    he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land
    and will strengthen your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden,
    like a spring whose waters never fail (Isaiah 58:11 NIV).

This message was given to rekindle the confidence of the Jews in God. They were to know that, even though, they’ve turned their backs on him, he still loves them and will guide them into the future. He will continue to be their source of strength and provision. He will refresh their lives like a well-watered garden.

Today marks the beginning of the year 2021. There are so many unknowns ahead of us in this year. Just as the sailors traveling on the unpredicted oceans needed a trusted lighthouse to keep them from danger, we also need God who will act as our lighthouse to guide us throughout this year. Let’s remember that, the God who through his love and mercy guided us through 2020, he’s the same God who will be controlling 2021.

If history is any indication of God’s faithfulness to his children, then we need to count on how he’s been with us in past; and allow him to be our trusted lighthouse. He knows how to sustain us, and will provide us with our spiritual, physical, emotional and mental needs.  All we need to do, is to sit patiently in our boats and allow him to guide us safely to our destinations.

In conclusion, let’s meditate on William Williams hymn;

GUIDE ME O THOU GREAT JEHOVAH[ii]

  1. Guide me, O Thou great *Jehovah, [*Redeemer]
    Pilgrim through this barren land;
    I am weak, but Thou art mighty,
    Hold me with Thy pow’rful hand.
    Bread of heaven, Bread of heaven,
    Feed me till I want no more;
    Feed me till I want no more.
  2. Open now the crystal fountain,
    Whence the healing stream doth flow;
    Let the fire and cloudy pillar
    Lead me all my journey through.
    Strong Deliv’rer, strong Deliv’rer,
    Be Thou still my Strength and Shield;
    Be Thou still my Strength and Shield.
  3. Lord, I trust Thy mighty power,
    Wondrous are Thy works of old;
    Thou deliver’st Thine from thralldom,
    Who for naught themselves had sold:
    Thou didst conquer, Thou didst conquer
    Sin and Satan and the grave,
    Sin and Satan and the grave.
  4. When I tread the verge of Jordan,
    Bid my anxious fears subside;
    Death of death and hell’s Destruction,
    Land me safe on Canaan’s side.
    Songs of praises, songs of praises,
    I will ever give to Thee;
    I will ever give to Thee.
On behalf of my family, staff and the entire members of Disciples Revival Church, I wish all of you a wonderful HAPPY NEWYEAR!
